A gel is a semi-solid jelly-like substance. A network of microscopic particles in water. A hydrogel is mainly water with other substances. Here"s the dictionary definition of gel. Basically, if you want a water-based moisturizer, a gel moisturizer is your best bet. While creams are suspensions of water droplets in oil, meaning that creams are primarily oil, lotions are emulsions of oil in water, meaning lotions are water-based, a gel is primarily water. Great news for someone who has an aversion towards oil, or has skin that is so oily, he or she balks at the thought of adding more oil that could clog the pores.

My favourite gel moisturizer is aloe vera gelly. I"ve used it as a moisturizer on my face and on my body. When pregnant, aloe vera gelly applied daily on the belly reduces stretchmarks. Actually, I didn"t get stretchmarks when I used aloe vera gelly with my first pregnancy.. and I delivered an 8-pound baby. As for the face, aloe vera gelly makes a wonderful moisturizer that leaves skin dewy and clear of pimples or discoloration. In fact, when I had eczema on my face, I bought tubes of aloe vera gelly and used that on my face. That was the only thing that soothed the itch and pain. It also heals the skin. In my opinion, aloe vera gelly is the best facial moisturizer around that is still affordable.

Hydrogels are mainly water. Hence if your skin is dehydrated, or if you are looking for serious hydration, especially in summer, go for hydrogels. These deliver the ingredients without the need for oils.

By the way, oily skin and acne prone skin would benefit from switching to gels. As would dehydrated skin that has oil but seriously lack moisture. On top of that, gels feel great on a hot day. They cool the skin in summer, making them the perfect summer moisturizers.
