When it comes to Clinique clarifying lotion, there are 4 types or grades if you will. Clarifying lotion 1 is the mildest, for really dry, sensitive skin. Clarifying lotion 2 is for normal skin, clarifying lotion 3 for oily skin and now there's clarifying lotion 4 for really oily skin.

I'm familiar with clarifying lotions 2 and 3 as my skin takes both just as well. The higher the number, the stronger the exfoliation and the higher the alcohol content. You'd see more dirt on the cotton when you use clarifying lotion 4 than 1. At the same time, clarifying lotion 4 would dry up your skin a lot more than clarifying lotion 1.

The trick is to choose the lotion for your skin type. Clarifying lotion 2 gets rid of more dirt after I wash my face. Each time I'm shocked at the grime I see on the lotion soaked cotton pad after I've already washed my face with soap and water. There's not cool tingling feeling with 2 which I get with 3, but 3 is more drying. 2 is gentler.

Which clarifying lotion should you get?

If your skin is really dry or sensitive or normal-dry, you can go for clarifying lotion 1.

If it is normal, normal-dry or normal-oily, you can take clarifying lotion 2.

If it is oily, normal-oily or really oily, you can take clarifying lotion 3.

If it is really very oily and your skin needs that alcohol, go for clarifying lotion 4.
