benzoyl peroxide

Benzoyl peroxide is a popular topical medicine used for treating acne. My family doctor prescribed benzoyl peroxide cream for my acne before putting me on antibiotics. Benzoyl peroxide is available from drugstores without a prescription which makes it a popular acne medication.

Acne is caused when the pores get clogged and acne bacteria multiplies within the pores, causing inflammation.

When you apply benzoyl peroxide on your skin, oxygen is created. When you have acne, bacteria breeds in your pores. The particular type of bacteria that causes acne cannot live in oxygen, so benzoyl peroxide kills that bacteria by making the environment inhospitable for the bacteria. By killing off the bacteria, benzoyl peroxide gets rid of acne.

I have used benzoyl peroxide on several occasions. Most of the time, my skin reacts badly to it. It gets red, dry, scaly and irritated. Especially when I go for the higher concentrations. Benzoyl peroxide is not meant to be used on irritated skin, red skin, raw skin or eczema as it can further irritate the skin.

Many people have found benzoyl peroxide useful on several occasions. I found the 4% benzoyl peroxide cream given to me by my doctor effective in clearing my acne. Though not a cure it keeps the acne under control.
