How To Paint Your Nails For Fall And Winter

When leaves fall from the trees and the skies darken, the cheerful color of Spring and Summer is soon forgotten. Fall and Winter fashion usually features plenty of black that reflects the somber mood. For Fall 2007 to Winter 2008, gray is the other big color. No doubt, these are livened up with a few pieces that are in jewel tones but overall, the color is drab.

Honestly, when the skies are dreary, the last thing you would want is to clothe yourself in dreary colors. So if top to toe black, gray or neutrals are it, then get a shot of color on your nails.

It is no wonder that come fall and winter, nail polish color gets deeper, more vibrant and stronger to balance all the black.

You might wear gloves when you go out but when the gloves come off, show brightly manicured nails. Forget about french manicures. Go for daring color. Better yet, go for bicolored nails.

How to do a basic manicure

After washing and drying your hands and filing your nails, here"s how to do a fall/winter manicure.
    1. Apply a base coat over the entire nail to protect your nail from discoloration. First stroke from bottom of nail to the tip of the nail down one side of the nail. Next stroke down the second side. The third stroke over the middle of the nail. Let it dry completely.
    2. Pick your color. Paint the entire nail in three strokes as above. Let it dry completely.
    3. Same color, paint the entire nail in 3 strokes, sides then center. Let it dry completely.
    4. Protect your manicure with a top coat. Paint it over each nail in 3 strokes.
For something more interesting, try bi-color nails. Pick 2 colors of equal intensity, like blood red and wine or fuschia and orange, or pink and peach. Choose one color as the main color and the other as the highlight.
    1. Paint the base coat and let it dry.
    2. Paint the entire nail in the main color and let it dry.
    3. Paint the sides of each nail in the main color and let it dry completely.
    4. With a steady hand, paint down the center of each nail from base to tip with the highlight color and let that dry completely
    5. Protect your work by painting the top coat over each nail.
